Go Green With Color! Color Trends Spring 2008 Provided by: Christina Kittelstad Spiral Design Color Consulting Go Green The current environmental trend towards “Going Green” is not only sweeping our community through the foods we choose to eat, the cars we drive, the businesses we patronize and the clothes we wear, but also through the greening of our homes and how we choose to decorate and furnish them. As an eco-friendly color consultant, I find this trend to be very exciting and look forward to it becoming the norm! Eco-Inspired Color Palettes This spring there is an obvious shift towards incorporating earth-friendly colors and exciting color palettes that provide more options to choose from and inspire us to create our very own dream home. Think about the colors you enjoy in nature, the ones that remind you of a wonderful tropical vacation or favorite travel destination and you will be right on track with picking winning color combos that will inspire you for months to come. Green is King! This spring and through 2008, color palettes will shine on one main color - Green. These include all shades, warm greens (think grass, botanical, sage & tropical) all the way over to cool greens (think lime, chartreuse and apple). Green not only inspires relaxation and calm, but also reflects the exterior environment of our homes, blurring the line between living indoors and spending time outdoors. The New Blue Sometimes blue can be blah but not this year! In 2008 the color blue will continue to be seen as a prominent color alongside green. Both colors will dominate popular paint colors and other design elements such as tile, countertops and home accessories. The full range of blue will be seen, especially glassy ocean blues, aqua and icy blues even deep sapphire, navy and indigo blues. Think of the sea, sky and other natural tones of blue found in nature and consider incorporating these into your home’s surroundings on walls, furnishings, linens and accessories. Natural Neutrals Spring ushers in a lighter and brighter way of modern living and this will carry over into a trend of all things natural, organic and un-dyed. There is an increase in the use of neutral colors and textures that make excellent combinations with green and blue - think white, tan, wheat, biscuit, beige and even soft pink hues. Think of sand, adobe, crisp linens and anything natural toned and textured. These natural colors make the perfect overall color in your home creating an airy space to incorporate accent walls of sky blue and sage green and many other winning combinations that will create an inviting interior that reflects the beautiful colors found outdoors that inspire healthy, vibrant living each day. Environmentally Friendly Paint Once you’re ready to refresh your space through paint color, and have your inspirational image in mind, consider selecting the appropriate paint. Be sure to buy high quality paint that is low VOC or no VOC (volatile organic compounds). This will ensure less fumes and dangerous gases that hurt the planet and our health, and not to mention is virtually odor free. Consider using this type of paint in children’s rooms, nurseries and any other room when possible. The quality and results of using low VOC paints are identical, if not better to using standard paint. I recommend purchasing paint from local, specialized paint stores over big box home supply stores. Sherwin Williams Harmony and Duration Home low VOC, low odor paints are designated with the GreenSure logo and are an excellent option. Benjamin Moore offers Eco Spec® and AURA® paints that are also low odor and low VOC. When purchasing your paint, just ask your paint store what low VOC options they offer. Generally the price difference of purchasing low VOC paints versus standard paints Get Up Close & Personal It’s your home, playground, retreat, gathering place, investment and sanctuary - so get personal and make it your own! Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors that appeal to you and inspire you to love your home and encourage your family to spend quality time together in a space that is fun and comfortable. Remember, paint is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve the look and feel of your home. If you make a color mistake, you can easily repaint it with another color you like better. In this market, many homeowners are choosing to stay put. This is the perfect opportunity to repaint and improve the overall feel and value of your property.
